I stumbled upon a post about rhinos online and later found an interesting article. It turns out that five rhinos are killed in South Africa every day—solely to have their horns cut off. The price for a kilogram of horn is $80,000 (which is ten times the price of a kilogram of cocaine in Argentina).
The Chinese believe it can cure anything, even cancer—despite the fact that its composition is identical to our hair or fingernails. But that’s not the point; let’s talk about the business side.
You can buy a live rhino for $4,000. The horn weighs between 2 and 3 kg. That already makes for an interesting profit margin. Those who kill the animals get paid $300. However, you don’t have to kill the rhino; you can keep it alive and simply cut off part of the horn (1.5–2 kg), which will grow back completely in 2–3 years.
It is incredibly inhumane to run a farm that raises rhinos for the sole purpose of cutting off their horns to sell them. But if the situation and trends don’t change, poachers will kill them all in about 8–10 years.
That’s why South Africa allows such farms to open and permits the official sale of horns, aiming to drive down the black market price.
This post is for anyone who wanted to start a business but didn’t know what to do.
