My university years were wonderful, especially the first few years. Life was carefree: you attended classes, studied a little, and didn’t worry too much. It was during that time that I fell in love and met Dasha, who later became my wife and the most important person in my life. I had a Delta moped and visited her almost every day — she lived in the city where I studied. We rode around, went for walks, and I returned home early in the morning.
At university, I became friends with Andrey, one of my classmates. He was a very modern guy for that time. He was always the first to learn about everything, whether it concerned our studies or life in general, and always kept his finger on the pulse. For example, he danced Electro Dance, filmed and edited videos, and already had his own YouTube channel.
One day, we were sitting and eating dumplings at a place called “Steklyakha” — a small café made of plastic and transparent glass — while talking about everything. We discussed what we would do after university and made plans for the future. At some point, he told me about copywriting: you write articles for other people, and they pay you for it.
This was completely new to me. I didn’t understand why anyone needed articles or who even read them. I thought information simply appeared on the internet somehow and had always been there 🙂 Anyway, it caught my interest. I decided to try writing something because I had always been good at writing essays on different literary topics at school.
My first article — which I initially wrote only for myself and had no intention of selling — was about education in the country. I described the problems within schools and universities and suggested ways to solve them. In other words, it was something of a critical rant 🙂
Then Andrey told me about a copywriting platform called Etxt, where I could register and take on writing assignments.
I registered immediately. It was 2013, and from that point on, everything took off. For the next six months, I practically lived on that platform. I accepted assignments and wrote about absolutely everything. Along the way, I learned about keywords, keyword stuffing, and other similar concepts.
I wrote about all kinds of topics, from how to get car insurance to how to build your glutes in 30 days. That was how I earned my first money online, and I was incredibly happy about it. I told Dasha everything, and she joined me. We started writing articles together and worked as copywriters for a while. By the way, I eventually listed my first article about education for sale on the platform, and someone bought it 🙂
Then I started wondering why anyone actually needed the articles I was writing. My own benefit was obvious: I was getting paid. But why was the client spending money on them? What did they gain from it?
