I remember my personal record: for 21 days, I barely saw the sun or daylight. It was still dark when I arrived at the factory, and it was already dark when I left. During the first stage, when the pigs were being prepared, my job was relatively easy — well, you understand how relative the word “easy” is here. But during the second stage, I got the full experience.
Because of my height — 183 cm — I was assigned to push pig carcasses. They told me, “You’re tall, so you’re suitable for this job.” That was when I really started building strength and toughening up. What did the job involve? The factory had a huge refrigerated storage area covering several hundred square metres. Pig carcasses, suspended by their legs, arrived there automatically — and that detail is very important — along a conveyor line.
Then there was me, pushing them manually along the line to the processing area. So, once again: they arrived inside the refrigerated area automatically, but from there, everything had to be done by hand 🙂 It’s difficult to describe how exhausted I felt after a 12-hour shift, pushing four, six, or even eight massive carcasses at a time. As soon as my head touched the pillow, I would fall asleep within a minute. It worked better than any sleeping pill.
Once I had pushed the carcasses to the processing area, they were split into halves.
They were then cut into the different products you can find in stores, from ribs to various cuts of fillet. Sausages and other similar products were also made there.
During my first month at the meat processing plant, I earned around $700 and realised that the job simply wasn’t worth it. In total, I worked there for three months. Just before New Year, I decided to quit and return home, get some rest, and then come back to Poland to find something better.
My friends were also working at the same meat processing plant, and they didn’t like it either. While I was sitting at home and they were still in Poland, we started choosing a new place where we could find work that was easier and more profitable — just like everyone else 🙂 But we had no idea what was waiting for us…
