In my opinion, it’s patience. First, you carefully select keywords, prepare briefs, write titles, and work on other on-page SEO elements. Then you search for backlinks and wait for them to be indexed. You watch the algorithms change, wait, stay patient, wait — and then wait some more.
My personal record was a powerful backlink for Motozilla that took me about a year to obtain. For half of that time, the publication was searching for the person responsible for advertising links. It then took another three months to approve the article placement and three more months to publish it and make the necessary edits. I called them every week and patiently waited to see whether they had finally found someone authorized to help me. Just 12 months — and now I have a backlink from a government portal 🙂
My point is that with every passing year — and I’ve been working in this field for around 10 years — I feel slightly more relaxed about the competition. Zoomers clearly aren’t ready for this kind of patience. The only question is whether artificial intelligence can handle a task like this 🙂
