So, I registered on a copywriting platform and started writing articles for clients. At the same time, I began learning about websites: why people create them, how they make money from them, and how to “promote” them. Yes, that was exactly the word I used back then 🙂 What did a website owner actually gain from running one?
That was probably when I first heard the term SEO and learned that things like SEO optimization and website promotion existed. In other words, if you wanted your website to become popular, attract readers, and generate traffic, you had to work on SEO. So that’s what I started doing.
At the same time, I began researching different ways to monetize websites. As usual, the simplest option I found was contextual advertising from Google — Google AdSense.
I was receiving a scholarship of around UAH 1,000 per month. I also managed to earn another UAH 3,000 by writing content for a regular client. That was three times the amount of my scholarship, bringing my total monthly income to around UAH 4,000 in 2014 — more than $300. That was very good money for a student at the time. In fact, most civil servants, teachers, and doctors earned less.
After learning all of this, I decided to create my first website in 2014.
It was a website about fitness and workouts. Why did I choose that niche? I was going to the gym at the time and was interested in learning everything about it — from workout programs and exercises to which protein or creatine supplements to take before, during, or after training.
For the technical setup, I turned to a friend who worked as a webmaster at a company. He registered a domain for me, connected it to hosting, and installed the DLE content management system. He also showed me how to publish articles and handle the other basic tasks.
