SEO Hack for Ranking Location-Based Queries

By Андрей Сорока

Today, I’ll explain how to promote a category or subcategory for location-based search queries. For example, how to rank at the top for a keyword combined with a city name, such as Kharkiv, Dnipro, or Lviv.

Let’s say you have an online furniture store with a general category page such as https://mebel.com.ua/divany. It has a Title and Description, perhaps Keywords, as well as a product description. In other words, the page has basic optimization and a product catalog with pagination pages: 1, 2, and so on, depending on the number of products in this large category.

👉🏻 What should you do?

Optimize each pagination page for a separate location-based query.

Optimize https://mebel.com.ua/divany/page-2 for the primary query combined with the city of Kharkiv. For example, change the Title to “Buy Sofas in Kharkiv…” Then update the Description and other basic optimization elements by adding the city name.

Visually and technically, https://mebel.com.ua/divany/page-2 will not look any different to a user who enters the website through this page. It contains the same product listings as the first page, https://mebel.com.ua/divany, as well as the same header and content blocks. You can also add optimized text at the top or bottom of the pagination page.

Users will still be able to browse the sofa category, use filters, and access other website features regardless of which catalog page they enter through.

Apply the same approach to other cities: https://mebel.com.ua/divany/page-3 for Dnipro, https://mebel.com.ua/divany/page-4 for Lviv, https://mebel.com.ua/divany/page-n for city N, and so on—as far as the size of your product catalog allows.

You can use the same method for other categories and subcategories, such as https://mebel.com.ua/shkafy/, https://mebel.com.ua/kresla/, and others.

Here is how it works in practice: we implemented this method on a website targeting queries such as “scooter parts” + city. After that, the pagination pages reached the top of the search results without additional content or backlinks. You can see the results in the image below:
