On Being Too Certain
Don’t you think that this kind of stubborn certainty about absolutely everything is a sign of stupidity?) When someone fiercely defends their point of view and tries to prove it, aggressively forcing it on others without doubting it for even a second. Literally zero doubt.
By acting this way, you set an extremely high bar for yourself. It’ll be pretty embarrassing if you later turn out to be wrong about this or something else. After all, you publicly declared yourself an expert and appointed yourself as one.
Personally, I think it’s easier to pretend you’re an idiot. People expect very little from idiots and don’t hold them to a high standard. If something works out, you’ve already done a great job, and everyone praises you for it. Even for the smallest thing. Took a piss and remembered to flush — well done 🙂
You often see this in football. When a team that is much weaker than its opponent plays against one of the giants and manages to get a result—even just a draw—everyone treats them like heroes.
For example, when I assess people, I don’t judge them by how much of an expert they claim to be in their own field. They can tell me whatever they want and feed me all kinds of bullshit—that’s one thing. Instead, I look at how they behave and what they say when the conversation turns to something they know nothing about, meaning my own field. I then apply that behavior to their area of expertise and assume they may act exactly the same way there.
Besides, doubting yourself and not knowing something is completely normal. It isn’t shameful, and it doesn’t mean losing face. I honestly don’t understand this desire to be the smartest person in the room and an expert on everything.
I’ve met people who told me directly: “I know and can do everything. I understand everything—work, life, and so on.” Strange, isn’t it? Saying something like that about yourself is just cringe. I think only your results or the people around you should be saying those things.
That’s all from me 🙂
