On Being Constructive
The most straightforward and efficient negotiations I have are with team and company owners. Everything is simple and specific: I need backlinks for India, DR 20+, and the budget is $1,000. What can you offer? Minimal fluff, just the facts, and everything moves quickly. The person spends a certain amount on a test, evaluates the results, draws conclusions, and moves forward—either continuing or testing something else.
People like this usually have consistent results. They are willing to get involved, make decisions quickly, and test different link-building methods. They have no time for bureaucracy: approvals, communication strictly during business hours from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., creating countless chats, nine people in one chat, formal greetings, mild hypocrisy, pointless conversations, and awkward attempts at humor.
But I also often receive strange and vague backlink inquiries in my DMs—the complete opposite of what I described two paragraphs above. The person doesn’t know what they need, what their budget is, which pages are the priority, which keywords they want to target, or what types of backlinks they want to test.
That’s when I step in and try to solve the problem for them: I suggest options and ask questions. In most cases, I receive equally unclear and vague answers, and the conversation goes nowhere. Usually, these people either have no results at all or only minimal ones. They find it difficult to make a decision and spend even $100 on a test. They want guarantees, results, and a return on their investment here and now—for example, within a week or two. There are countless fears and 2,000 questions about things that don’t even matter.
By expecting fast and guaranteed results, the person misleads themselves. Like a victim, they search for “their own maniac”—someone who will openly lie to them, make promises, and guarantee that they’ll become rich quickly for just $50. There is probably some subconscious psychological explanation for this. Eventually, they find such a person, get no results, become disappointed, and grow even more resistant to testing and making quick decisions.
I’ve described two completely different and opposing approaches to link building and SEO in general. At the beginning of my journey, I was also the second type—I admit it, I used to get confrontational). But I’ve considered myself part of the first category for a long time now. I sincerely believe that the sooner you move into the first category, the sooner everything will fall into place—and life will simply become easier.
