My Story. Part 6

So I spent a week back home, and right after New Year’s it was time to head back to Poland. This time I arrived in Wrocław. I had already arranged a job at a furniture factory. My friends also quit their jobs at the meat processing plant and came to Wrocław. We all checked into the same hostel. Hotels were way out of our budget, so we saved money on absolutely everything. That was the first time I had ever slept in a room with a dog. Before Cheryshnia, I’ll be honest, I was afraid of dogs. When I was a kid, I got bitten by a neighbor’s mutt. So I climbed onto the top bunk and felt safe. Relatively.

We thought we’d only stay in Wrocław for a couple of days. Instead, we spent more than a month there. Why? Good question. The job we were supposed to start simply got canceled. So we started looking for another one. Every single day, scrolling through groups and chats. We didn’t want to end up too far out in some village, away from civilization. Sometimes the pay wasn’t good enough, sometimes there weren’t enough working hours, sometimes it was too far away, and sometimes they actually wanted money just to give us a job (yes, we were expected to pay someone to get hired).

So every now and then we’d find something on the outskirts of Wrocław or in a nearby town, travel there, look around, completely lose our minds, and head back. The money kept disappearing, but we still couldn’t find anything decent. One girl from our group cried almost every day. We’d check out of the hostel, then check back in two or three days later. Every time we left, we genuinely believed we wouldn’t be coming back. We got around the city without paying for public transport. Like I said, we saved money everywhere we possibly could.

But there’s one trip I’ll never forget. A chicken egg processing factory. Just picture the vibe. We found a job listing for a factory not far from Wrocław. We signed up and took a train to a nearby town. At the station we met one guy, talked everything through, and then another guy showed up. We exchanged a few words. Five minutes later, some dude pulled up in a bright red sports car. I honestly don’t remember what it was—maybe a Corvette, maybe a Ford Mustang, maybe a Chevrolet. Two doors, flashy as hell. He loaded our luggage into his car. We got into another vehicle, and they drove us to the accommodation. We arrived, got out, and they showed us the place. The girl immediately said no and was completely shocked. Everything was filthy. It was winter, freezing cold, with holes in the windows and window frames. Instead of beds, there were just mattresses on the floor. Half the workers were drunk out of their minds. The bathroom was covered in vomit. Some wasted guy was passed out over the sink. So we simply said no.

It turned out that the guy driving the red sports car was some kind of manager. He said, “No problem, it’s all good. I’ll take you to the bus stop and you can head back to Wrocław.” So we got in. We drove through the forest. He stopped and said, “The bus will be here in about thirty minutes. Good luck.” We thanked him. Thirty minutes passed. No bus. An hour. Then an hour and a half. It was already 11 p.m., dark, and we were standing in the middle of the forest with all our luggage, waiting for something that wasn’t coming. Around midnight the girl started crying. We realized something wasn’t right. About ten minutes later, some workers from that accommodation drove up and said, “He screwed you over. He got pissed because you turned down the job, so he dumped you here in the forest on purpose.” I don’t know why, but I just started laughing hysterically. Damn… what a revenge plan. 🙂 They picked us up, drove us back to Wrocław, and we checked into the same hostel once again. As tradition demanded, the girl cried a little while checking in, we cooked some pasta in the hostel kitchen, and went to bed. Because tomorrow was another day, and another chance to keep searching.

To be continued…
