App Store App Promotion
I just have to share this with you. Today, I spent my scheduled learning time reading articles and watching videos about promoting apps in the App Store. It’s certainly not my usual area of expertise, but I couldn’t tear myself away; I found it fascinating to learn how things work there and what methods and tools are available. To sum it all up, here are the most interesting and non-obvious takeaways:
1. App Store promotion also relies on keywords and semantics. After all, people don’t just search for apps by generic names like “reader,” “strategy game,” and so on. This means you need to keep this in mind and prepare a list of keywords when adding your app.
- Unlike Yandex or Google, the App Store search function is incredibly basic—it can barely do anything. To ensure you get found, you need to specify keywords; don’t spam, just list the most essential ones.
- Just like a webpage, an App Store app has a Title (name – 255 characters).
- There is a keywords field – 100 characters.
- There is no morphological processing: “game,” “game’s,” and “games” are treated as different words. “Woman,” “to a woman,” and “woman” (accusative case) are also treated differently. Phrases are assembled word by word.
This is how apps appear in search results.
Ranking:
1. Only about one and a half apps fit on the smartphone screen after a user types a query into the search bar. Consequently, the first app captures around 80% of the traffic. Apps ranked below the fifth position receive almost no traffic.
If you aren’t in the top 5 (Google looks at the top 10), you’re out of the running.
2. Like those of Yandex and Google, the App Store ranking algorithm is proprietary.
- However, app SEO specialists experiment and try to boost rankings through trial and error.
4. App rating affects ranking.
- The frequency of app updates and improvements affects ranking.
6. Keywords in the “keywords” field affect ranking.
