Essentially, any attempt to imitate natural user behavior can be considered manipulation.
The first thing that comes to mind is backlinks. Almost everyone builds links, artificially increasing online mentions of their brand by publishing content on third-party websites.
Manipulating behavioral factors is considered a gray-hat SEO technique. Fewer people use it compared to link building because they are afraid of being banned or penalized. In reality, however, the principle is the same. Both backlinks and behavioral factors involve manipulation. What matters is how you approach it. In my opinion, link building has come to be seen as a milder and “safer” promotion method.
I’ve never manipulated behavioral factors on my own projects before, but I really want to try it. I have a theory about promoting search queries by “manipulating Google search suggestions” while making the process look as natural as possible. Here’s the idea:
- there is a branded query: “Motozilla”;
- there are motorcycle model pages that struggle to rank—for example, Jawa pages perform poorly for queries such as “parts for Jawa.”
What if we combine these two queries into one—“Motozilla + Jawa”—and make Google understand that the Motozilla brand is associated with Jawa motorcycles? It would look as though users want to order Jawa parts directly from the Motozilla store. I wonder how this would affect the rankings for the direct query “parts for Jawa.”
If the motorcycle-parts example seems complicated, consider the Lamoda brand. There is the query “Lamoda” and another query, “buy a plaid shirt.” We manipulate the suggestion “Lamoda + buy a plaid shirt” and then monitor how Lamoda’s website performs for the query “buy a plaid shirt.”
If you understand my logic and think the idea makes sense, give it a like.
If you think it’s nonsense, give it a thumbs down.
I’ll keep thinking about whether I should test this idea on the website.
