A few days ago, I noticed a sharp increase in the number of links shown in the “External links” section of Google Search Console. In other words, these are backlinks to my website that Google has discovered. After taking a closer look, I found what appeared to be a spam attack: lots of links from porn websites and Chinese platforms. I’ve attached a screenshot.
My immediate assumption was that these links might be the reason Motozilla suffered so badly during the spam and core updates. On the other hand, I’ve read that Google is now quite good at detecting spammy backlinks and simply ignoring them. But if that’s true, why does the Disavow Links tool exist?
So I manually reviewed the 1,000 backlinks available for export in the report, and around 700 domains ended up in my disavow file. Overall, I have already disavowed more than 1,700 domains, and the list continues to grow regularly.
Now I’ll wait for Google to disregard these links and for another batch of backlinks to appear in the report. I’ll then have to review them as well, since the first 1,000 examples did not include all the bad links. Or is there already a way to export every incoming backlink that Google sees in Search Console?
