Profile Backlinks

This is the first post in a series about different types of backlinks. I want to break down all the available link types—I’ve identified around 20 different types that exist on the market in 2026—and share my opinion and attitude toward them. Let’s start with profile backlinks. Here we go.
____
I consider profile backlinks one of the simplest types of links and the starting point for many people getting into link building. There are a ton of myths surrounding them. Some people consider them complete garbage, others buy them by the thousands, while some don’t understand why they are needed at all. Let me share my perspective.

What is a profile backlink? It is a link created when you register on a website and set up an account. During or after registration, you usually have the option to add information about yourself:

🟢 name;
🟢 description;
🟢 avatar;
🟢 city;
🟢 website;
🟢 other information.

The “Website” field is where you can add a link to your project and do a bit of spamming. The link is placed neither in an article nor in a comment—it appears inside the user’s profile. Where can you get these backlinks?

🟢 forums;
🟢 blogs;
🟢 various communities;
🟢 CMS-based websites;
🟢 online services;
🟢 business directories;
🟢 question-and-answer websites;
🟢 some marketplaces;
🟢 educational platforms.

Any website that allows users to register and add a website to their profile can potentially become a source of this type of backlink. That part is clear 🙂 So why do you need profile backlinks at all? Most profile backlinks won’t push your website to the top of the search results. That is simply impossible. They cannot replace quality outreach links costing $300 each or strong, niche-relevant backlinks. In my opinion, they serve a couple of other purposes:

a) Diversifying your backlink profile

Here’s an example to explain my logic. Suppose you are promoting two websites. You build 50 outreach links to the first website, while the second project also receives:

🟢 profile backlinks;
🟢 forum backlinks;
🟢 Web 2.0 links;
🟢 comment backlinks;
🟢 guest posts;
🟢 directory links.

Which backlink profile looks more natural? Obviously, the second one. As strange as it may sound, even in 2026 people still register on different platforms, add links to their websites, and participate in online communities. Profile backlinks therefore make a website’s backlink profile more diverse.

If your backlink profile consists exclusively of editorial outreach links, it doesn’t look natural. You can take any major project, such as Amazon, YouTube, or another well-known website, and examine its backlink profile. In most cases, you’ll find huge numbers of UGC links from forums, profiles, and comments—hundreds of thousands of links shared by people across different online communities.

b) Helping with website indexing

Googlebot frequently crawls quality UGC platforms. If the profile containing your backlink is open to indexing, Google may discover both the link and the website—or the internal page it points to—more quickly. The most important thing is to get the profile backlink crawled and indexed. Otherwise, it provides no value.

Not all profiles are equal. Some are created on active, authoritative websites that receive around 500 users per day. Others are placed on dead forums with no traffic where nothing gets indexed. Naturally, the value of these backlinks will differ.

Does building profile backlinks still work in 2026, or is it complete nonsense?)

I think it works if you approach it properly and keep your expectations realistic. If you create 10,000 profiles with Xrumer and expect your website to rank at the top for its target keywords within a week, that’s complete nonsense. But manually creating and completing profiles on selected quality platforms, adding links to their descriptions, and using them to build a natural background, link velocity, and cover for outreach, homepage, or sitewide links is a completely different approach. You need to understand that profile backlinks are no longer a primary link type or promotion tool. They are simply one component of a diverse and dynamic backlink profile.
