The Most Important Rule for a Successful Informational Website
The most important rule for a successful informational website or blog is to analyze demand and create content targeting actual search queries. As the saying goes, “Wordstat is your friend.” As simple and obvious as it may sound, that’s how it works. People have certain interests, and everyone searches for something or asks Yandex and Google questions. Your task is to provide the most accurate possible answer to their question. If you do that, you win.
I often come across people who complain on various forums and in online communities that their websites receive no traffic—or receive some, but very little and grow slowly. About one in five has no idea where traffic comes from or what they should do. These people also tend to use phrases like, “I need to somehow promote my website,” imagining that it involves secret techniques and some kind of magic.
It is much more difficult to write an article about something you personally like and then make people find and read it through search engines. This is the wrong approach. Social networks, Instagram, and other platforms exist for sharing your personal thoughts. They don’t use search rankings, and their feeds operate according to different algorithms.
If you want to receive search traffic, write about what other people are interested in. This doesn’t mean you should write for search engine crawlers, overstuff your content with keywords, and so on. No—write natural, human-friendly content, but always put demand first and adapt your offer to it.
