How Backlinks Relate to Rankings and Traffic in Google
Ahrefs has a blog post about backlinks that looks at the relationship between the number of backlinks, Domain Rating (DR), URL Rating (UR), search rankings, and organic traffic. The analysis draws on data from nearly a billion websites and pages in Ahrefs’ database.
♻️ This chart shows the relationship between the number of referring domains and traffic. You can see a sharp rise in traffic when DR exceeds 60.

♻️ This is the most interesting part: how the different metrics compare in their relationship with website and traffic growth.

My top three metrics:
♻️ Website DR: higher DR is associated with more traffic.
♻️ Number of backlinks: more backlinks are associated with more organic traffic.
♻️ Number of dofollow backlinks.
Here’s a gambling project I worked on. We used several types of backlinks, but forum and community links formed the foundation. The charts make the parallel trends easy to see:
👉 1. The number of referring domains increased.
👉 2. The website’s DR rose alongside it.
👉 3. Organic traffic grew at the same time.
