Motozilla Update Results
The updates are over. The result: Motozilla’s traffic has dropped even further, by approximately 50%.
Thanks to everyone who sent me direct messages and shared possible traffic recovery solutions from other channels. In my opinion, the website was affected by the spam update. We handled the core updates relatively well, while the content update that first rolled out at the end of September didn’t affect us nearly as much.
I think Google has started treating some of the website’s content as spammy or unhelpful. I’ve come up with several hypotheses about what may have caused this:
🟢 Automatically generated description blocks on category pages
🟢 Automatically generated description blocks on product pages
🟢 Product structured data in category descriptions, including rating stars
🟢 FAQ markup on category and product pages
🟢 Other category page blocks, such as expensive and affordable products, the number of products, and so on
Absolutely everything has dropped: product categories, product pages, model pages, tag pages, filters, and even the blog. All of them declined by roughly the same percentage. This suggests that the cause is sitewide and likely connected to something affecting the entire website.
For now, I don’t know what to do or where to start. First, I’ll wait a few days. Some of the traffic may begin to recover, and I’m really hoping that happens. If it doesn’t, I’ll start removing parts of the generated content and request an external audit.
