It’s been a while since I shared any news about my sex shop, so here’s an update. The store has been declining since the beginning of the year. More precisely, its traffic has been falling since January 4 — I’ve attached a screenshot. I chased quick results, and Google punished me severely for it.
In my opinion, I heavily overoptimized the site with anchor text and homepage backlinks — and ended up killing the domain 🙁 Since January, I’ve made numerous attempts to recover it and somehow save the project.
First, I removed homepage backlinks and reduced the anchor text, but the site declined even further. Then I restored them. I also tried making targeted content changes on individual pages, but nothing helped. The traffic and rankings continue to fall, so I no longer see any point in investing in this domain. I simply don’t believe in it anymore 🙁
What makes the situation particularly concerning is that the entire website is declining — every single page. All the pages that previously ranked in positions 1–3 have dropped out. Essentially, only informational blog traffic remains, while commercial traffic is probably close to zero 🙁
I invested around $5,000 in link building over the lifetime of the project — and this is how it ended 🙁
It was difficult to make this decision, but I’m moving the project to another domain. I’ve already purchased it and will start everything from scratch 🙂 I won’t redirect the old domain because I’m afraid that any penalties could be transferred to the new one through a 301 redirect.
I’ll try to save part of the backlink profile. I plan to contact the webmasters through the platforms where I purchased the links, as well as anyone else I can find, and ask them to update the target URL — either for an additional fee or free of charge, depending on what they agree to.
At its peak, the store received around 200 unique visitors per day. I don’t know how much of that was commercial traffic, but the website generated over $1,000 in monthly revenue.
So that’s the situation. What would you suggest doing with the old domain?
